I returned to the sport about twenty-five years ago after not having hunted since joining the Navy in 1970. I was a rookie in every sense of the word. After reading through the hunting abstract published by MassWildlife, I decided to try bowhunting for the first time.
I went to a local sporting goods store and bought my first bow; a Black Bear model compound bow that drew back 60 pounds. The bow was made by Bear Archery, a company founded by bowhunting legend, Fred Bear. I also bought a half-dozen arrows that looked good to me, some practice “field points” for the arrows, a 3-pin metal sight that mounted on the bow to help me with aiming and accuracy at various distances, and a traditional 3-finger archery glove for drawing the bow.
