Simple things like not spending an hour swinging on the bars straight after a month long break from gym, incorporating static/floor/casts into the circuit (i.e not JUST bars only), correct fitting grips & making sure the girls (esp the younger ones) dont turn the magnesium into a paste-like glue on their hands!
but in saying that, almost every gymnast is going to be unlucky enough to have a rip the lesson before a meet at least once in their career.
as i tell my girls…Rips are “character building” and show you really want this. You are not a gymnast until you have had a rip. Its a right of passage.
...John Orozco has performed at the Garden once before, though he doesn’t remember much about that night and he won no medals for his routine. He was just a scraggly little 8-year-old boy, part of a team from the Sutton gymnastics club in Manhattan, when he climbed to the tip-top of a human pyramid during a Knick halftime show.
There weren’t many acrobatics to that particular program, nothing like the multi-platform skills he will be showing off Saturday at the American Cup – a tune-up at the Garden for the Olympic trials in June and for the London Games in July. Orozco has evolved over the past year into this nation’s top-rated men’s all-around gymnast, a long way from his Harding Park life in the South Central Bronx that still makes him smile in a dreamy sort of way.
