...After a seemingly season-long epidemic of players' helmets coming off during plays, the Canadian Football League has taken the first step to enacting a new rule aimed at improving safety.
The CFL's rules committee proposed Thursday that beginning this coming season referees will be instructed to whistle plays dead as soon as a ball carrier's helmet comes off.
Additionally, any non-ball carrier who loses his helmet is no longer allowed to take part in the play. Nonball carriers who violate the rule will be flagged for a 10-yard penalty. Anyone who hits a helmetless nonball carrier is subject to a 15-yard penalty.
