Cal baseball coach David Esquer believes there are ways to improve safety for pitchers other than altering bats.
"The bat has been a lot of the attention, but they could have dumbed down the ball," Esquer said. "The ball is actually the implement they're afraid of hitting the pitcher."
Another option: Protective head gear for pitchers.
"The hitter has a helmet, and he's waiting for the ball to come at him every pitch," Esquer said. "The pitcher is sometimes in a vulnerable position and not expecting the ball to come to him. I think it's a gross oversight."
